Today, you will safe land in Laos international airport. Be warmly welcomed by our professional tour guide and escorted to your selected hotel in Luang Prabang. Spend the afternoon for wandering the riverside or exploring the many temples dotted amongst the town. With very little traffic it’s easy to get around with kids. In the late afternoon take a one-hour guided walking tour of Luang Prabang’s bustling night market, try sample local food and shop for handicrafts.

DAY 2: LUANG PRABANG

Activities: Pay a visit to Wat Xieng Thong, former Royal Palace, Mount Phousi & take part in a Baci ceremony.
Enjoy the local food at hotel’s breakfast, your family will be introduced to the Buddhist culture by visiting Wat Xieng Thong and Wat Mai temples; and observe monks in saffron robes going about their daily chores. Continue the interesting day with seeing the former Royal Palace which is now the National Museum, and its halls containing rare religious and cultural artifacts. A panoramic view of the whole city from the top of Mountain Phousi is a highlight of day as well. Take part in a Baci ceremony where you will have white cotton strings ties around your wrist for good luck.

Join in Baci ceremony at a local family
Baci or more commonly called ‘su kwan’ (meaning “calling of the soul”) is an important ceremony of Lao people practiced for hundreds of years. The ritual is held to celebrate important events and occasions, like Lao New Year, weddings, births, homecomings, entering the monkhood, or in case of tourists, to honor visitors and guests. On the ceremony, you will gather around a handmade marigold pyramid, called Pha Khuan, while an elder chants blessings and ties pieces of white threads around your wrists, which are believed to bless and preserve good luck for participants. At the end of the ceremony, all guests will enjoy a feast of food, drink, and some Lao circle dances. Joining in Baci ceremony at a local family is the best chance for visitors to delve deeper into Laotian culture and their spiritual life. Mount Phousi
Located in the heart of the old town peninsular Luang Prabang, Mount Phousi, also known as the ‘sacred hill’ in Lao, stands at 100 meters above the sea level that makes it the highest point in the town as well as a must-see for any visitors in Laos. Surrounded by the Mekong River and Nam Khan River, the hill is a holy religious site of local people and a popular sunset & sunrise vantage point for international tourists. There are two staircases to reach the top of Mount Phousi, each with more than 300 steps, several viewpoints and Buddhist shrines. The advice here is you should take one up and the other one down to visit all scenic and cultural sites. At the top of the hill, you will see Wat Chom Si, a golden Buddhist stupa dating back to 1804, where is also the best place to enjoy the breathtaking 360° panorama of Luang Prabang town and forested mountains. Mount Phousi is quite busy in the late afternoon when visitors come to admire the sunset, so you can visit the hill before dawn for a more peaceful experience.

Royal Palace in Luang Prabang
Located on the banks of the Mekong River and facing the sacred Mount Phousi, the Royal Palace was built in 1904 to serve as the residence of King Sisavang Vong and his family during the French colonial era. After the revolution in 1975, the palace turned into a national museum and opened to the public in 1995. On the palace grounds, there are some buildings such as an exhibition hall, Haw Pra Bang that houses the standing Buddha statue called Prabang – the palladium of Laos, Royal Barge Shelter, Staff Headquarters and the Royal Ballet Theater. Besides enjoying the royal religious objects, the last king’s collection of cars, ancient statues, and paintings dating for centuries, you can also marvel at the stunning architecture of the palace that is a blend of traditional Lao style and French Beaux-Arts. The Royal Palace Museum is really well worth a visit to learn about Lao history and culture as well as the royal lifestyle.

Pay a visit to Wat Xieng Thong – the highest symbol of Buddhism in Laos
Wat Xieng Thong, literally translated the ‘monastery of the golden city’, is one of the oldest and most important temples of Luang Prabang as well as one of the highest symbols of Buddhism in Laos. This Buddhist temple was built in 1559-1560 by King Setthathirath in the northern tip of the peninsula where the Mekong River and the Nam Khan River join. After a number of restorations, Wat Xieng Thong now consists of more than twenty structures on the grounds including a sim, a royal funerary carriage house, pavilions, shrines, residences, and gardens. As the temple still keeps its original form, a visit around will show tourists the characteristics of 16th-century Lao art and craft with the 2-tiered roof, colorful mosaics and carvings depicting Lao legends and the tree of life on the rear temple walls. Wat Xieng Thong is also an important venue where significant annual festivities in Luang Prabang are held.

DAY 3: LUANG PRABANG

Activities: Explore the apectacular Kuang Si waterfalls & bears rescue center. Visit Big Brother Mouse, a non-profit charity organization which provides Laotian children with free libraries and access to reading materials.
Pick up at your hotel for a short transfer through the Luang Prabang countryside to Kuang Si Waterfalls (32 km to the southwest of the city). Along the way by the Mekong River with various viewpoints, you will witness gorgeous landscapes of many rice fields, hills, and villages. An opportunity for you to learn about the traditions and culture of an ethnic minority at a village where the local people have remained their culture unchanged for centuries. Upon reaching Kuang Si Waterfalls, relax and enjoy the magnificent natural surroundings. The water tumbles down and cascades gently into several cool, clear pools where you can enjoy a refreshing swim. The adventurous may walk to the top of the falls via a steep track where stunning views are awaiting them. Kuang Si Waterfalls also is a place where a rescue center for protecting sunbears, the endangered species, is located.
Enjoy a gourmet picnic lunch next to the falls before returning to Luang Prabang. Afterward, take a book party at Big Brother Mouse – a non-profit charity organization which provides Laotian children with free libraries and access to reading materials at any of its centers in Luang Prabang and Vientiane. Most children in Laos have never seen a book other than a textbook. Tourists are welcomed to Big Brother Mouse’s centers and to make their donations of reading materials to remote villages.

Big Brother Mouse Center in Luang Prabang
Based in Luang Prabang town, Big Brother Mouse (BBM) is a book publishing and literacy program that produces children’s books in English and Lao to give them more chances on reading and learning. BBM makes these books accessible by encouraging travelers to purchase books and distributing them to rural Lao villages during their hikes/treks as gifts to local children. Tourists can also visit a BBM’s center where you help Laotian children and young adults practice speaking or reading English. The conversations happen naturally between motivated students and tourists about things around their life and culture. Visit the bear rescued center in Luang Prabang
Located 30km southwest of Luang Prabang, Tat Kuang Si Bear Rescue Centre is only a short walk past the entrance gate to Tat Kuang Si Waterfall. Run by Free the Bears with the help from the Laos Department of Forestry since 2003, this excellent center is home to many wild Moon bears rescued from poachers and illegal wildlife trade where they have an open enclosure to live and play freely with lots of trees and swings. Due to the growing population of rescued bears, there are other bear houses built in the hills near Nahm Dong. When visiting the center, you can observe these lovely animals playing and enjoying their food from a viewing platform and along the wooden paths. The visit will be the best chance for visitors to learn about these adorable bears and other wildlife we need to protect. If you want to support the center, you can buy a T-shirt or make a donation.

Elephant village in Luang Prabang
Established in 2001, Elephant Village is a wonderful place where tourists get to know more about the elephants of Laos who are rescued from the abusive environment or the logging industry and cared by professional veterinarians. This is a great day of fun for the kids discovering the weird, wonderful and quirky statues of Buddha Park just 25kms outside of Vientiane. The park is the folly of Luang Pu Bunleua Sulilat, a monk, shaman and mystic of Hinduism and Buddhism. Keep your eye out for the skeleton thin Buddhas, a giant pumpkin with a demon head, a gigantic 40m long reclining Buddha, or Shiva waving his menacing eight arms of swords!
The trip will be finish at Vientiane international airport. You will take the flight back home or to the next destination to continue your family holiday. Have a safe flight and see you again with us!

Enchanting collection of Buddhist and Hindu sculptures at Buddha Park in Vientiane
Buddha Park, also known as Xieng Khuan or Spirit City, is an open-air sculpture garden housing a large number of Buddhist and Hindu sculptures. The park was built in 1958 by Bounleua Sulilat, a priest-shaman and sculpture artist on the bank of the Mekong River, around 25km southeast of Vientiane. There are more than 200 sculptures made from reinforced concrete displayed in the park that vary in sizes and shapes. Some are statues of Buddha and Hindu gods, the others are sculptures of demons, deities, and mythological creatures. The most striking spot is a giant pumpkin with three floors representing Hell, Earth, and Heaven. You can enter inside the pumpkin through a demon head’s mouth serving as the entrance, climb staircases and you will reach a vantage point that offers the entire park view. Another notable attraction is an enormous 40-meter-long reclining Buddha.
