Yuanyang Hani Rice Terraces is located in the north of Ailao Mountain, which is the masterpiece cultivated by generations of Hani people. As the core area of Honghe Hani Rice Terraces, it consists of three main parts: Bada Rice Terraces, Duoyishu Rice Terraces and Laohuzui Rice Terraces. Check the tips before starting your trip.

  • Best time to go: It’s available to have a tour to Yuanyang Rice Terraces around the year round. If you want to seize the most beautiful terraces scenery, November to next April is the best time. However, the rice terraces scenic areas are too crowded during the Chinese Spring Festival holidays. You will be surprised to find out that there are so many photographers there. Try to avoid this time if you don’t want to see the tourists in flocks.
  • Most hotels in Yuanyang have rough maps of the area to give out for free. Knowing the locations of the villages and the rice terraces areas.
  • Watch a sunrise or sunset over the flooded rice terraces are one of the greatest highlights to to Yuanyang. The ideal places to view the terraces at different time are:Sunrise: Duoyishu, 1hour ride from Xinjiezhen; Qingkou, 15minutes from Xinjie TownSunset: Laohuzui (1 hour) / Bada (1 hour), Longshuba (only accessible by foot in around 40 minutes from Xinjie Town)
  • Wear appropriate shoes or boots and hike carefully, the steep paths sometimes may be quite slippery, especially in a rainy day.
  • The day generally goes to Qingkou and Bada to watch the sea of clouds. If you can only watch the sunset for one time, then go to Laohuzui. If the itinerary will be arranged for one day, it is suggested to live in Duoyishu.
  • Passenger buses are to Nasha Town commonly, if you want to go to Duoyishu, you need to transfer vehicle to Xinjie Town. Xinjie town has bus back to Jianshui and Kunming. The latese buses to Jianshui are 4 o’clock in the afternoon. From Kunming to Yuanyang takes around 7 hours and a half, from Jianshui to Yuanyang takes around two and a half to3 hours.
