Laos is a landlocked country with relatively backward infrastructure, despite the increasing number of domestic flights and newly completed roads, it still takes time to get around the various regions.

How to Get in Vang Vieng

Vang Vieng is a small town located in central Laos, surrounded by beautiful scenery and known for its outdoor activities, caves, and waterfalls. Here are some ways to get to Vang Vieng:

By Air

The Luang Prabang International Airport is the nearest airport to Vang Vieng, but it may not have direct flights from your location. You may need to take a connecting flight to Bangkok or Hanoi before flying to Luang Prabang. From the airport, you can take a taxi or a bus to Vang Vieng, which will take approximately 3-4 hours. Or you can take a flight to Vientiane Wattay International Airport, and then take a bus or car to Vang Vieng.

By Train

The Boten-Vientiane Railway officially opened in December, 2021. Vang Vieng is one of the station along this railway. Visitors can take the high-speed train from Luang Prabang or Vientiane to Vang Vieng. The travel time is largely shortened by high-speed train.

By Bus

Buses are a popular mode of transportation in Laos, and Vang Vieng is well connected to other cities. You can take a bus from Vientiane Southern Bus Station or Luang Prabang Bus Station. The journey from Vientiane takes around 4-5 hours, while the journey from Luang Prabang takes around 5-6 hours. The buses are generally comfortable, but the roads can be bumpy and winding, so be prepared for a slightly rough ride.

By Van

Shared vans are a faster and more convenient option than buses, but they are more expensive. They operate between Vientiane and Vang Vieng, and the journey takes around 3-4 hours. The vans are usually air-conditioned and comfortable, but they may not have much legroom, so it may not be the best option if you are tall.

By Private Car or Taxi

If you prefer a more comfortable and private mode of transportation, you can hire a car or a taxi to take you to Vang Vieng. The journey from Vientiane takes around 3-4 hours, while the journey from Luang Prabang takes around 4-5 hours. This option is more expensive than the others, but it allows you to travel at your own pace and stop for breaks whenever you want.

By Motorbike

If you are an experienced rider and enjoy the freedom of the open road, you can rent a motorbike in Vientiane or Luang Prabang and ride to Vang Vieng. The journey can be challenging, especially during the rainy season when the roads can be muddy and slippery. Be sure to wear a helmet, bring rain gear, and check your route before setting off. You can also consider hiring a local guide to accompany you on the journey.

How to Get Around Vang Vieng

Walking or Biking

Vang Vieng is a small town that can easily be explored on foot or by bicycle. Walking is a great way to experience the town's relaxed atmosphere and take in the beautiful scenery. If you prefer to bike, there are several rental shops where you can rent a bicycle for a day or more. Biking is an excellent way to explore the surrounding countryside, and there are several bike tours available that take you to some of the town's best attractions.

Motorbike

Renting a motorbike is an excellent way to explore the town and the surrounding countryside at your own pace. Motorbikes are available for rent from several rental shops in town, and prices start at around 100,000 kip per day (about $12 USD). However, it's important to note that motorbike accidents are common in Laos, and the roads can be steep, winding, and sometimes in poor condition. If you're not an experienced rider, it may be best to stick to walking or other forms of transportation.

Tuk-Tuk

Tuk-tuks are a popular mode of transportation in Laos, and you can easily hire one to take you around the town or to nearby attractions. Tuk-tuks can be found parked along the main street in Vang Vieng, and fares are negotiable.

Songthaew

Songthaews are shared pickup trucks that operate as taxis in Vang Vieng. They are cheap and convenient, especially if you're traveling in a group. Songthaews can be found parked near the bus station and along the main street in town. Fares are negotiable, but expect to pay around 10,000-20,000 kip per person for short trips within town.

Private Car or Van

If you prefer to have a more comfortable and private mode of transportation, you can hire a private car or van with a driver. This is a great option if you're traveling with a group or have a specific itinerary in mind. Prices vary depending on the distance and duration of the trip, but expect to pay around 500,000-1,000,000 kip (about $60-120 USD) per day for a car or van with a driver.
